Top 10 Fall 2009 Perfumes...

One important thing to note in the fall 2009 perfume lineup is a general lack of the typical fare of gourmand perfumes. The absence of any new gourmand perfume releases creates a vacuum for a new big trend in perfumery. What will the next hottest type of perfume be?

Since Thierry Mugler Angel‘s release in 1992, creamy gourmands were all the rage in women’s perfumes. This pioneering perfume took oriental perfumes, usually filled with sweet fruits and amber, to the next level by adding other mouth-watering edible notes like caramel and chocolate. The trend of chocolatey gourmands, baked goods gourmands, and candy gourmands completely overtook and dominated the perfume industry for well over a decade. This season, we will see that gourmand trend starting to wane.

While the predicted best-selling perfumes of fall 2009 lack those edible notes of chocolate, sugar, or caramel, they are still creamy, warm and sweet. The closest nod to the fading gourmand trend would be the perfume pair, Saint and Sinner, from Kat Von D. The big trend with will be sweet flowers and fruits overlaid an ambiguously sweet, creamy base of musk and vanilla. There will be one stand out scent among these best-sellers  which will integrate something new and exciting. This perfume will be Si Lolita from Lolita Lempicka. Read on to find out more about these top fall 2009 perfumes.

Lolita Lempick Si Lolita

lolita-lempicka-si-lolita

Si Lolilta is currently available around Europe and will be launched in the US sometime in 2010. Si Lolita is a spicy floral with notes of pink peppercorn, pink peppercorn, bergamot, mandarin, sweet pea, Elemi balsam, patchouli, amber and tonka bean. The effect is said to be delicately sweet, milky and peppery all at once. To some it’s sounds like a soft, intricate symphony—a new and exciting floral construction. To others it’s too vague to seriously consider.

Marc Jacobs Lola

 marc-jacobs-lola

Marc Jacobs Lola is a new cold weather perfume that was launched late this summer. The notes include pink peppercorn, pear, grapefruit, peony, rose, geranium, vanilla, tonka bean and musk. Unlike Si Lolita, this perfume doesn’t do flips and turns through various perfume categories to be interesting. Lola is a solid sweet fruit-floral perfume. The warmth of musk, vanilla and tonka bean create a soft base that would suit many perfumistas’ tastes.

Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One

Other predicted best-selling perfumes fall into the same category as Marc Jacobs Lola, in that they embrace the general construction of a sweet fruity-floral with a vanillic musky base. Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One will be filled with black currant, grapefruit, mandarin, rose, lily, lychee, peony, sandalwood, amber, musk and vanilla. Sounds like a smoldering super sweet fruity-floral construction with blackcurrant and rose standing as the star notes.

Anna Sui Rock Me

Anna Sui Rock Me launched this fall is another sweet fruity-floral perfume that offers a woody vanilla base. Rock Me includes notes of orange, peach, pear, lily, honeysuckle, jasmine, cedar, amber and vanilla. Rock Me, coming in a guitar shaped bottle and effusing sugary fruity notes, will definitely appeal to the youthful crowd.

Kate Moss Vintage

Kate Moss is well-known fan of floral perfume. As devotee of classic floral perfumes, like Creed and Penghalion Bluebell and Geurlain L’Heure Bleue, it’s no surprise that Kate Moss latest perfume release features is a powdered vanillic floral. Kate Moss Vintage includes the following notes: pink peppercorn, freesia, mandarin, heliotrope, jasmine, almond, tonka bean, vanilla and musk.

Chantal Thomass Osez-moi

Released this summer, Chantal Thomass Osez-moi (or Dare Me) will transition well into the fall. Osez-moi includes frangipani blossoms, rose, chamomile, peony, vanilla, musk and vetiver. Osez-moi will be another vanillic floral scents to throw into the fall perfume lineup. This time, however, Osez-moi highlights soft creamy florals and adds smoky texture to this common perfume construction.

Kate Von D Saint & Sinner

The debut of Kat Von D’s fragrance line offers two fruity-floral perfumes. Sinner is filled with orange blossom, mandarin, plum, jasmine, cinnamon, vetiver, patchouli, woods, vanilla, and musk. Saint’s notes includes plum, mandarin, gardenia, caramel, jasmine, vanilla, musk, and sandalwood. While both are intensely sweet, one perfume maximizes its fruity-floral character with cinnamon spice and the other highlights its fruity-floral character with creamy, smoky caramel.

D&G Fragrance Anthology L’Imperatrice 3

dolce-gabbana-limperatrice

Launched late this summer, Dolce & Gabbana’s Fragrance Anthology features a number of solid perfumes and cologne. L’Imperatrice 3 will probably be the stand out fragrance that will transition easily from summer to cooler weather. L’Imperatrice is a light zesty mix of fruits and flowers. Sounds familiar? It may be so, but L’Imperatrice stands out just a little by offering a very soft, barely there base. L’Imperatrice includes notes of  watermelon, kiwi, pink cyclamen and musk. L’Imperatrice is a god-send for those who cannot endure creamy, heavy basenotes.

Juicy Couture Couture

Juicy Couture Couture, released this summer, is another addition to the creamy florals already sitting in Juicy Couture’s lineup. Couture includes mandarin, orange blassom, grapefruit, jasmine, honeysuckle, plum, vanilla and sandalwood. This Juicy Couture fragrance includes the requisite zesty opening, sweet and creamy florals, and softly sweet base. This perfume construction has been a long popular favorite among perfumistas, so one more perfume added to the mix can’t hurt!

StellaNUDE

After a long court battle over the name of this fragrance, StellaNUDE was launched this summer. StellaNUDE is a lighter, more fresh version of the creamy floral perfumes. This fragnrace includes Moroccan rose, grapefruit, peony, pink peppercorn, vanilla and amber. Stella promises this rose fragrance will be fresh and sparkling. Whatever the outcome, the vanillic and amber notes will bring this rose-perfume into the lineup of fall perfume favorites.

Si Lolita promises to offer a refreshing new take on floral perfumes, while Kat Von D Saint and Sinner duo will offer two great gourmand perfumes. Marc Jacobs Lola will probably lead in the fruity-floral arena. And those looking for vanillic floral perfumes Kate Moss Vintage. StellaNUDE promises to provide a light relief from the typically creamy fare of vanillic florals. What will be your go-to perfume this fall?

Thierry Mugler Alien: A Great Transition Perfume f...

As cool weather starts to set in, we’re all beginning to make our transitions. We put away the lawn and patio furniture, we fold up the summer clothes and replace them with the autumn knits, we turn on fireplace on the occasional chilly morning and evening. Of all these transitions, there’s one important seasonal shift that perfumistas love to talk about—your fragrance change.

thierry-mugler-alien-print-campaign-2008-2Most perfume aficionados have a favorite perfume for summer and winter. For some this is simply a celebration of the passing of time. But for others, it’s a dire necessity to change a perfume with every passing season. While hot weather can cause a perfume to expand to suffocating intensities, cold weather can cause a perfume to shrink to undetectable concentrations. So in these last waning days of summer, it’s key to find a perfume that smells great in summer heat and autumn chill.

Through all my perfume sampling, I’ve found that Thierry Mugler Alien is a great transition fragrances. In fact, the entire Alien line can help you descend slowly into cooler days. Each Thierry Mugler Alien perfume is centered around a soft, soothing jasmine note. But the unique qualities of this perfume stop those jasmine notes from smelling familiar, traditional or boring. Strange and beautiful synthetic notes allow Alien to smell both warmly sunny and refreshingly breezy at the same time.

The limited edition versions of Alien are lighter and softer, which is great for the late days of summer. Both Alien Sunessence and Alien Eau Luminescente integrate notes of lemon, citrus and orange blossom into the floral jasmine core. These perfumes feel breezy, yet comforting. For more information on these limited edition flankers, check out these reviews on Alien perfumes.

thierry-mugler-alien-print-campaign-2008Also, this fall, Thierry Mugler is releasing a new edition of the Alien perfume. It’s called Alien Liqueur de Parfum, and it integrates woody notes. This perfume is aged in wood barrels, just like fine liqueurs, so as to incorporate the well-rounded woody notes. To find out more about the new-fangled perfume-ageing process, check out this article on Thierry Mugler Liqueur de Parfum.

The original Thierry Mugler Alien is a widely loved perfume. This perfume is filled with expansive, creamy jasmine notes and the softest soothing wood accords. At times, Alien smells buttery, yellow, and warm like sunlight. At other times, Alien smells fruity, frozen, and crisp like frozen grapes. Lingering behind this magical fragrant illusion is another layer of complexity—a synthetic effusive accord. Alien is not a simple, natural, straightforward jasmine perfume. Alien is a unique perfume that proudly offers jasmine notes a modern edge.

As we’re all considering our perfume transitions and thinking about what next to buy, take a moment to consider Thierry Mugler Alien. This is a jasmine perfume that is soft, but sweet, and all around unique. It’s a great stand out fragrance for the changing weather!

Bruno and Model Alessandro Ambrosio in Thierry Mugler

Bruno and Model Alessandro Ambrosio in Thierry Mugler

While many fashion designers and perfume creators do a lot of navel gazing these days, Thierry Mugler has always been a fan of star gazing. In tough times, many in the fashion industry tighten their sequined belts to simply recycle popular creations, banking of previous moments of fashionable brilliance to ensure their future success. On the other end of the spectrum, Thierry Mugler, the designer with a penchant for daydreaming about solar systems and galaxies, constantly challenges current norms and seeks to make beauty from something out of the ordinary.

Lady Gaga in Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler currently dominates in both perfumes and fashion. As Lady Gaga outwardly displays her love of Thierry Mugler designs, Beyonce recently delcared that her newest fashion line Sasha Fierce will be based on the fiercely feminine style of Thierry Mugler. Though it seems every stylish diva is currently paying hommage to the inventive Thierry Mugler, it wasn’t always so. His fashion forward designs, featuring hip-emphasizing, body-hugging forms, shocked the public back in the 1990s. Because the fashion world couldn’t comprehend the mind-blowing fusion of mod, glamour, futurism, and classic body-conscious forms of a bygone era, Thierry Mugler’s fashion line temporarily faltered. But as his fashion suffered a minor shortfall, his perfumes did not. Thierry Mugler’s Angel perfume, a drippingly sweet and shockingly smoky delight, was instantly scooped up as a hit from day one of sales.

If you’re already a fan of Thierry Mugler Angel, you know exactly what the rage is all about. If you’ve yet to experience this fragrance-forward perfume, you’re in for a treat. As most beauty brands currently model their newest perfumes on previous top-selling fragrances and as they hyper-saturate the fragrance market with one perfume drone after another, the beauty counters start to smell like a blur. Enter a department store to smell the latest 30 fragrances to only realize that you could have just smelled one for the same the effect. Many perfume houses hope to reach top sales dollars with ambiguously spicy florals, peppery bursts of fruits and a suggestion of vague basenotes. And there you have the backstory to most perfumes today. Though we could spend hours deciphering the differences and perks of each perfume drone, my point is that Thierry Mugler Angel clearly stands head and shoulders… or should I say stopper and bottle… above all other perfumes.

Thierry Mugler, A Heavenly Gourmand

For 15 years running, Thierry Mugler Angel has consistently stood in the limelight of popularity. Thierry Mugler Angel is a the delightfully surprising gourmand. It features a mix of patchouli and a few edible traces of a caramelized praline and the bitter brightness of red berries. While other perfumes aim for the ever popular trio of florals, fruits and pink peppercorn. Angel remains dark and departs from florals all together.  The fragrant results are curiously feminine and enchanting. Apparently, as a result, Thierry Mugler Angel has inspired the wave of gourmand, dark perfumes. Ever check out a perfume that smells something like candy, cake, chocolate, or caramel? That’s a piece of Thierry Mugler inspiration right there.

Ever sampled Thierry Mugler’s classic Angel? What are you thoughts on this perfume?

Alien by Thierry Mugler...

alien-perfumeIf you’re the type of perfumista who worships jasmine, Thierry Mugler’ Alien perfume might just suit your nose perfectly. Alien is a well dressed jasmine infused with warm amber notes. This beautiful fragrance commands immediate presence but subtle on the sillage. It’s provocative, radiant and evokes a certain mystery – a playful mix of emotions, sensual yet demure-like. A garden of fragrant jasmine Sambac blossom overflows at first sniff. The top notes may come off a tad overpowering to some but slowly it fades into velvety softness emanating from cashmere, amber and vanilla.

Alien is quite a rich scent. It soothes but is not the typical fragrance that emanates a cozy feel. It is cold, distant, more like an aloof scent, so to speak. The playful mix of weirdness makes the scent more interesting and not mention more inviting as it permeates a whiff of mystery with its distinct fragrance.

Perfume reviews rant and rave about Alien. Fragrance pretty much depends on one’s body chemistry. You either love it and wear it like second skin or completely despise it as the accords react differently on your skin as the scent comes off as too overpowering. Here’s one Alien user who likes the fragrance a lot, “A friend of mine let me use some of her “Alien” for me to try today. So I sprayed a little dose at the back of my hand. After the first blast of intense violet has settled down, I was immediately intrigued by the presents of this unusual scent! Intense, strange and absolutely beautiful!” And another one enamored by Alien’s hypnotic ambiance, “ I don’t think that I need to mention, that I was constantly sniffing the back of my hand. I seldom did this with any other fragrance. Yes, it is true, “Alien” is not for everybody – but for the women who can put this off, this fragrance will be certainly making a leaving impression on anybody, if used in small doses.” Yet one perfume user finds herself on the fence with Alien, “Strange cosmos…It’s not like Angel, this one is completely odd. Your nose will not be able to pick out certain notes. This brand delivers interesting perfumes, I can say that. I’m not going to jump on the space ship though.”

Alien is housed in an amethyst-colored bottle whose shape is as weird as its namesake. The fragrance was launched in 2005 and was created by perfume designers Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere.
